Hoko Island is made up of andesite columnar joints. It was named Hoko Island due to the fact that the rock columns look like rows of halberds, a kind of pole weapon known as a ‘hoko” in Japanese. The view of the Sea of Japan from the top of the island is exceptional, and strolling the beaches searching for seashells is a popular activity.
